How to make cheap liquor by the gallon - legally and safely

Well President Bush's veto held up to the U.S. house's attempt at an override on the SCHIP expansion. Whew. We can breathe a sigh of relief, but not for long. The socialists are probably on the march as we speak and marshalling their forces for a re-write.

At any rate, with that nasty bit of legislation out of the way, it's time to sit back and have a drink. What's that? You're tired of paying ridiculous "sin" taxes on your liquor? Look no further. I've got a solution.

Home brewing is legal, safe, cheap, and easy when you know what you're doing. Note that this does NOT involve a still of any kind. That is both dangerous and illegal. This information is strictly for brewing alcohol, which is legal in Kansas so long as it's not sold or given to anyone (or performed by a minor). this info is intended for adults ONLY and I would be the first to support prosecuting any minor who used the info. However, it's basic chemistry, so if someone wanted to figure it out, he would.

OK, here we go. Beer is a little more of an art than hard liquor, and it costs more to produce. So I'm starting off with the hard stuff. The supplies you'll need will run you about $30.00. Then you'll need about another $15-$20 to make your first 6.5 gallon vat of ethanol alcohol (the good drinking stuff). From then on, that's about how much it will cost you. Your finished product will be either 6.5 gallons of 40 proof (20%) pure ethanol alcohol (ETOH) or 3.25 gallons of 80 proof (40%).

Supplies can be purchased at any home brew shop, or over the net. At a minimum, you'll need:

(1) 7.5 gallon food grade bucket with lid (must have hole in lid)
(1) spigot with drain hose, filled with activated charcoal
(1) package of liquor quick brewing yeast / ingredients
(17.5) pounds sugar
(6.5) gallons water

Disolve the sugar into lukewarm water. Add the yeast packet. Cover. Wait 7 days. Drain through charcoal filter. Congratulations, you've got 6.5 gallons of 40 proof ETOH. You want 80 proof? Freeze it. Drain the alcohol off the top, then discard the water.

You can add this directly to a soft drink or purchase flavors for any type of liquor you prefer for about $5.00 per bottle (makes a 5th).

There you have it. No still, no dangerous vapors, no poisonous by products, no legal trouble, and NO TAXES.

Does it bother you to pay so much in taxes for something that is basically just rotten sugar and yeast and can be made cheaply, safely, and easily by any adult with a room temperature IQ?
